Closing Citibank savings account

I had a Citibank account that was opened by my previous employer it was a zero balance account (salary savings account). Recently I got a letter from Citibank saying that they are going to convert my salary account into saving account, which meant I had to maintain an MAQB (minimum average quarterly balance) of Rs 25,000/-.

Considering the fact that Citibank has only two branches in all of Bangalore(may be all of Karnataka). I just didn’t need a savings account with Citibank.

Since there are only two branches in Bangalore, I knew once I went to their branch I would be stuck there for a long time. So I started searching for information on-line about closing the account. I came across this post written by Mr. Vinaya HS and I found it very useful. It saved me some time. I didn’t follow all the steps underlined by him. These are the things I did.

1. Reduce your account balance to zero.
This can be avoided, at the time of closing your account, If you have over Rs. 60/- in your account, Citibank would give you the money via a DD(Demand Draft) sent to your residential address.

2. Download this account closure letter template.
There is just one line of change in this document when compared to the one put online by Vinaya. Citibank doesn’t take back the Cheque book and the Debit card while closing the account, they would ask you to destroy them. So I made a change to the document. A form is also available at Citibank branches too which can be used instead.

3. Fill in your account and personal details and take a printout.

4. Courier the thing!
Just courier the printout to below address: Citibank N.A., Mail Room, No. 2, Club House Road, Chennai – 600002. You don’t need to send your debit card, Cheque Book and photocopy of ID proof. You don’t have to worry about Step 5. You should receive an SMS informing that the account is closed within a week.

OR

4. Carry a photo proof.
This can be anything, your pan-card, voter’s id card or even your office access card. You may carry the Cheque books and the Debit card just in-case.

5. Visit the nearest Citibank branch.
Hand over the letter at the desk and after the person there puts a seal on the letter ask him for a copy of the letter you have given and you would have an acknowledgment.

Citibank takes two days to close the account once the request for closure of account is accepted. Before signing off I would like to thank Mr. Vinaya HS.

It is a command-line web browser I had made a year and a half ago. I found this image while cleaning up my system. It had tons of bugs like no keyboard interaction. But still it is my favorite web browser. Unfortunately I no longer have the code for it.

Ubuntu: Super Cow Powers

When I first thought of using Ubuntu I was warned by some of my friends that it would not be a pleasant experience but I decided to take the plunge. Now after few months of using Ubuntu. I can assure you there weren’t many hassles. On the contrary I found out that Ubuntu has a good sense of humor too. To illustrate it, consider the two commands

apt-get
aptitude

They are used for installing and uninstalling software on Ubunu. I was curious to find out the difference between these commands, Since they performed the same task.

First I typed “apt-get” and in the response I received the text “This APT has Super Cow Powers.” caught my eye.

Next I typed “aptitude“. It didn’t give the desired results. So I typed “aptitude -23“(You can type any wrong input) and this time I got another text “This aptitude does not have Super Cow Powers.“.

I dumped what I was looking for and decided to investigate the “Super Cow Powers” and I came across few Easter eggs in apt-get and aptitude. I have listed some of them down for you.

Past few days of my life

Last few days have been really great. Things have gone very smoothly. Last few days have also been completely sports filled. The US Open, Italian Grand Prix, Champions League Twenty20 and EPL(English Premier League). What more can a sports fan ask for?

I would like to point out some of the happy and disappointing moments of last few days.

Saturday

1. Fernando Alonso taking pole position in Italian Grand Prix.

2. Arsenal defeated Bolton Wanderers, Arsenal 4-1 Bolton Wanderers.

Arsenal's captain Cesc Fábregas, was the deserved man of the match

3. This is going to make some of my friends angry, A three all draw between Everton and Manchester United, which meant Manchester United dropped two points and left Arsenal at second place behind Chelsea.

4. In cricket Chennai Super Kings defeated Central Districts comprehensively in Champions League Twenty20 match.

5. And last but not the least Rafael Nadal made it to his first US Open final.

Sunday

1. Fernando Alonso wins Italian Grand Prix and jumps into third place in driver’s Championship

2. Royal Challengers Bangalore trashed Guyana in Champions League Twenty20.

Tuesday

1. Nadal wins US open to complete “Career Golden Slam“(Winning the four Grand Slams and a gold medal in tennis at the Summer Olympics). Only Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi have achieved it before Nadal. Roger Federer is considered to have achieved only a Career Grand Slam since his Gold Medal at the Olympics was in men’s doubles. He also joined an illustrious group consisting of six others who have won all the four grand slams(Career Grand Slam). Read this.

1. Mumbai Indian lost to narrowly to Lions by 9 runs.

Although I am a Rafael Nadal fan, I would give up anything to watch Nadal and Roger Federer battle it out in a Grand Slam finals. So it was disappointing to see Federer lose to Novak Djokovic.

Monday
US Open Final being delayed by rains.
