Information on protecting yourself from fraud, please review the Security Tips in our Security Center.

This is actually a form of phishing.

Phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.

Quoted from Wikipedia.

There were four things which saved me.

1. The mail went to spam section. Credit goes to Google mail(Gmail) for this because unlike Yahoo mail it doesn’t put useful mails into spam. So I trusted Google mail to do its job.

2. On checking the sender email id, I realized it was from commercial Internet domain name (.com) instead of it being .net. All the mails from HDFC bank comes on domain ending with .net. This mail was from “customercare@hdfcbank.com” instead of net“.

3. Importantly I had never received this message despite trying to logging in with wrong passwords, Accidentally of course.

4. The most important point, the URL didn’t work. It was brought down for performing illegal action.

The fourth point also meant I could not see the html file, which also meant the end of the investigation. May be it’s a good thing that I don’t use Windows OS and there is no risk of using Internet Explorer, since the mail requested me to use IE. Somehow using Ubuntu and Macintosh(without Safari) makes me feel a little safer.

If you ever come across such mails be careful, because banks normally don’t ask you to login to Update your Account.

Please make time to go through the link, it contains a list of other spam mails.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Funny Laws

Ever since the arrest of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, I have been searching the web for laws which at the best can be called funny. I have come up with a small collection of such laws.

Julian Assange

Wales :
– All boys must, by law, learn to play rugby.

Iceland :
– It is forbidden to run a Marathon in less than 3 hours 30 minutes.

Russia :
– Anyone not willing to work a 16 hour day can be thrown into prison.

Thailand :
– At the age of thirty unmarried women become the property of the state.

– It is illegal to leave your house without wearing underwear.

USA :
– In Arizona, donkeys cannot sleep in bathtubs and you may be imprisoned for 25 years for cutting down a cactus.

– In Baldwin Park, California, nobody is allowed to ride a bicycle in a swimming pool.

– In Los Angeles, a man can legally beat his wife with a leather belt or strap, but the belt can’t be wider than 2 inches, unless he has his wife’s consent to beat her with a wider strap. Consent should be given prior to the event, as is carefully stipulated.(You must be kidding!)

Philippines :
– Cars whose license plates end with a 1 or 2 are not allowed on the roads on Monday, 3 or 4 on Tuesday, 5 or 6 on Wednesday, 7 or 8 on Thursday, and 9 or 0 on Friday from 7:00 AM onwards to keep roads free of traffic jams

South Korea :
– Traffic policemen are required to report all bribes that they receive from motorists. (Imagine this in India.)

Sweden :
– Prostitution is legal but it is illegal to use the services of a prostitute.

United Kingdom :
– The head of any dead whale found on the British coast becomes automatically the propriety of the king. The whale tail is the property of the Queen.

– It is legal to kill a Scottish if you find him in the old town area, but only if he carries an arc with arrows.

– In city of Liverpool, home of The Beatles, a woman is prohibited by law to walk around topless, unless she is selling exotic fish at the market.

– In Scotland the law obliges citizens to allow whoever knocks on their door to use their toilet.

Australia :
– Although it is illegal for children to buy cigarettes, condoms and alcohol, it is legal to use them.

– It is illegal to dress as Batman. (I hate this rule. My favorite super hero is Batman.)

Finland :
– Donald Duck was once banned for not wearing pants.

France :
– It is illegal to name a pig ‘Napoleon’

I am not really sure whether some of these laws ever existed. But we all can do with little laughter.

Apple and the Beatles

I spent most of today seeing the image attached below.

click on the image to enlarge it.

It’s not that I had no work to do. I was testing a Safari plug-in and every time I launched Safari web browser, I was taken to Apple’s web site. Since it was my homepage (I don’t use Safari often, so I never bothered to change it.). Yesterday there was another image on Apple’s website asking people to be ready for something huge.

Every time I saw this image today I would think of my favorite Beatles song which is We Can Work It Out.

For the uninitialized.

There are so many wonderful songs to select from, We can work it out was the first song of the band I had heard and it has been one of my favorite song ever since. What is your favorite Beatles song?

Two masters

Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan

I have taken this image from Jackie Chan’s Wikipedia page. This is a picture of Jackie Chan working as a stuntman in the 1971 Bruce Lee film Enter the Dragon. Bruce Lee (left) is “snapping” Jackie Chan’s neck. Unfortunately there are no higher resolution image available.

Just goes to show that with hard work and dedication and also with some luck lots of things can be achieved.

Next time I am watching Enter the Dragon I will make it a point to look out for this scene.
