Good Bye IE 6

This article is my final good bye to Internet Explorer. Microsoft has said many times that it plans to phase out IE 6. But I wasn’t surprised to find a download link for IE 6. That is standard operational procedure for Microsoft. They don’t get rid of anything.

It has been an eventful journey for IE 6, which was the default browser available on Windows XP. The most widely used OS till date.

Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) was the sixth major revision of Internet Explorer, a web browser developed by Microsoft for Windows operating systems. It was released on 27 August 2001.

IE 6 is widely derided for its security issues and lack of support for modern web standards, making frequent appearances in “worst tech products of all time” lists, with some publications labeling it as the “least secure software on the planet.”

It is also the only browser till date to have received a full fledged funeral. Don’t believe me? Check this out. The funeral pics have been put up on flickr.

In between these lows there were highs which very few Web-Browser might ever reach. IE 6 commanded a market share of close to to 80% in 2002 and 2003. And combined with with other versions of IE’s it’s market share had reached up to 95%. It’s market share started decreasing only from 2006 thanks mainly to the release of IE7 and Firefox.

The kind of success that IE6 had achieved despite being derided for security issues, leads to a question,

Why is it so popular?
There are lots of reason,
i. Since it’s a default browser on Windows XP, the most successful product to come out of Microsoft. Few people don’t upgrade to the higher version of IE or other browsers.

ii. There are lots of guys using pirated version of Windows XP, few of these guys are still worried about upgrading to higher version of IE.

iii. There are these cyber cafe, where the web browsers are not upgraded.

iv. After the demise of Netscape Navigator, there weren’t many challengers to Microsoft’s hegemony in the web-browser market.

Slowly the campaign to get rid of IE6 has caught some steam. The reason for the campaign is simple, the browser is completely outdated. IE6 has outlived it’s life-span. It is hard to support and also recently IE 6 was used to hack into google which makes this browser a security risk.

If you are using IE 6 browser please upgrade to the latest version of IE or other Web browser. My vote would go to Firefox 3.6 and Opera 10.50. Nothing beats the plug-in support for Firefox but it leaks memory and my love for opera is well known

Google Chrome is more secure than these two browsers but it sends user information to google, which I don’t like. So I will never upgrade to Google Chrome and not suggest this browser to anybody else.

Please do visit this website and read this article . I can’t do better job than these guys.

I would like to sign off saying “goodbye IE6 and sorry I couldn’t attend your funeral”.
